Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi is a public engineering institution founded in 1919 as the Banaras Engineering College. It became the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University in 1968. It was designated an Indian Institute of Technology in 2012.

Among engineering colleges, IIT (BHU) Varanasi was ranked 19 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2018 and 28 overall. It was ranked 9th among engineering colleges in India in 2017 by The Week.
