The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is a public engineering institution located in Powai, Mumbai, India. It is the second-oldest institute of the Indian Institutes of Technology system. It was established in 1958.

M.Sc. (Applied Geology) Admissions-

M.Sc. in Applied Geology is a two-years programme

Admission Requirements

B.Sc. First Class/Division with Geology as major subject and Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Biological Science as subsidiaries with Mathematics as one of the subjects at 10 + 2 or higher levels

Candidate must have obtained at least 60% aggregate marks at the B.Sc. examination.

Selection for admission will be based on the performance in the Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. ( JAM) conducted in the first/second week of May.

Syllabi for Admission Test

Crystallography: Concept of symmetry classes and systems and corresponding forms. Habit and features of natural crystals; twins.
Crystal Optics: Nature of light and its propagation in different media. Optical properties of crystals and study of the same under polarising microscope.
Mineralogy: Physical, structural, chemical and optical properties of silicate and non-silicate minerals - and ore - forming minerals.
General Geology & Geomorphology: Solar system, age and origin of earth, rivers, glaciers and groundwater, orogeny, isostasy. Fluvial glacial, marine and karst landforms. Volcanism & earthquake, island arc, plate tectonics.
Structural Geology: Primary and secondary planar and linear features in rocks, Folds, faults, joints and unconformities, their classification and recognition. Disrupted strata and their interpretation. Geological maps and cross-sections.
Igneous Petrology: Texture, structure, mineralogy and chemistry of igneous rocks, classification of igneous rocks. Bowen's reaction principle. Binary and Ternary systems. Generation of magmas and there evolution. Magmatism and associated tectonism.
Metamorphic Petrology: Kinds of metamorphism. Classification, nomenclature, fabric and mineralogy of metamorphic rocks. Factors of metamorphism. Zones, facies and their characteristics. Facies of thermal and regional metamorphism.
Sedimentary Petrology: Texture, structure and composition of sedimentary rocks. Classification and nomenclature of sedimentary rocks. Provenance, diagenesis, lithification and environment of sedimentation.
Stratigraphy: Principles of stratigraphy, geological time scale, outline of methods of correlation. The physiography and structural framework of India. The distribution, classification, organic remains and economic minerals of the standard Precambrian and Phanerozoic geological formations of India.
Economic Geology: Formation and classification of ore deposits. Occurence, distribution, mineralogy, industrial use and reserves of metallic, radioactive and non-metallic ores. Basic knowledge of occurrences of petroleum and coal deposits.
Palaeontology: Conditions and modes of fossilization. Applications of fossils. Study of morphological characters and geological distribution of Foramanifera, Corals, Molluscs, Brachiopoda, Trilobites, Echinoderms and Graptolites. Elementary knowledge of the nature and geological distribution of plants and vertebrate fossils.
