The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) is a national level entrance test conducted every year by Indian Institute of Technology Madras for admission to the master programme offered by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) of the Institute.

The test is completely computer based and is usually conducted in the second or third week of April in various cities across India. This is the only test of its kind, which admits students to a five year integrated masters programme in humanities and social sciences subjects offered by an IIT.

Eligibility Criteria
One applied for HSEE-2018 was either completed or appeared in 2017 in any one of the following qualifying examinations (QE):
(a) The final exam of the 10+2 system, conducted by a Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities
(b) Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Exam conducted by a Board or University recognized by the Association of Indian Universities
(c) Final exam of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy; senior secondary school exam conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects
(d) Any Public School, Board or University Exam in India or in a foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)
(e) HSC vocational examination
(f) General Certificate Education (GCE) exam (London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level
(g) High School Certificate Exam of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva
One who had completed Class XII (or equivalent) exam outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian
In case the Class XII exam was not a public exam, one had passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) exam earlier

Nationality
One who was not citizens of India at the time of registering for HSEE 2018 (by birth or naturalized) are treated as foreign nationals
Percentage of Marks in QE: One belonged to the GEN Category & OBC Category had secured a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in the QE. One belonged to SC/ST & PwD Categories must secure a minimum of 55% in aggregate in the QE

Date of Birth:
One, whose date of birth falls on or after 01st October 1993, was eligible for HSEE-2018; however, for SC/ST & PwD candidates, upper age limit was relaxed by 5 years, i.e., one belonged to these categories/ sub-categories born on or after 01st October 1988 are eligible

Physical Fitness:
Every qualified candidate had to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner in the prescribed format that was made available along with the letter of offer of admission
