The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) is a public engineering institution established by the government of India in 1951. It was the first of the IITs to be established, and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.

Its vision is to be a centre of excellence in education and research, producing global leaders in science, technology and management; to be a hub of knowledge creation that prioritises the frontier areas of national and global importance and to improve the life of every citizen of India.

Internationally, it was ranked 308 in the QS World University Rankings of 2018. The same rankings ranked it 62 in Asia and 24 among BRICS nations. It was ranked 501-600 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2018, 60 in Asia and 71 among BRICS & Emerging Economies University Rankings in 2017.
