Masters in Design (MDes)- Visual Design offered by IITH (Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad) is a two year full time Programme which aims to provide broad-based understanding of design along with student-driven specialization in varied domains like visual communication, moving images, interaction design and photography.


Eligibility Criteria:

One should have a valid CEED score and a minimum of 55% marks (50% marks for SC/ST) or equivalent grades in the qualifying exam, which are:

Bachelor degree in Engineering / Architecture / Design/ Interior Design or equivalent (4 years duration after 10+2)

Professional Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent of 4 years duration after 10+2)

B.F.A. (4 year professional programme, after 10+2)

G.D. Art (5 year programme after 10th) with one year post qualification, professional experience Master degree in Arts / Science / Computer Applications (2 year programme after 10+2+3)


Selection Process:

The selection is based on a Design Aptitude Test and the shortlisted candidates will have to appear for personal interview.


Common Core Subjects (9 credits)

Elements of Visual Design: Form explorations, Color, Composition, Drawing, Design language, Artistic expressions, Design and Society

Evolution of Visual Design: History of Art, History of Design, Semiotics, Aesthetics, Material culture, theoretical approach to image making and contemporary concerns and communication studies

Design Methods: Morphology of Design process, stages in design process– user studies, conceptual design, Embodiment, detailing, functional innovation and creative methods


Specialization Core Subjects (12 credits)

Graphic Design: Illustration, typography, printing technology, packaging

Information and Experience Design: Information design, user-experience design, data visualization, Human-Computer interaction, usability, visual ergonomics

Digital Imaging and Photography: Analog photography, historic practices, digital photography, tools, techniques, Contemparory photographic practices, GIS

Moving Images: Film language, elements of video, multimedia and animation, sound, editing, narrative theory, script writing, story telling
