IITB or Indian Institute of Technology is affiliated to University Grants Commission – UGC. Its vision is to be the fountainhead of new ideas and of innovators in technology and science.

At the institutional level, it is governed by a Board of Governors with a chairman nominated by the Visitor, the Director as a member and the Registrar as secretary.

There are 4 persons having specialized knowledge or practical experience in respect of education, engineering or science nominated by the Council.

2 professors are nominated by the Senate. Additionally, one technologist or industrialist of repute is nominated by the Government of each of the States of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.

Internationally, it was ranked overall 202 globally and 46th among Asian institutes in the QS World University Rankings(Quacquarelli Symonds) for 2015.

IIT Bombay featured in top 400 in the ranking by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2015-16.

In India, among engineering colleges, it was ranked second by Outlook India in 2015. Among universities in India, it ranks second in Careers 360 (Magazine) Top Universities in India 2015.

Amongst government engineering colleges, it was first by Mint in 2009. It is ranked 2 in National Institutional Ranking Framework published by Ministry of Human Resource Development in April 2016.
