Re: IIM Calcutta Summer Internship
The Summer Internship Program is meant to bridge the gap between the real-life business and academic institutions. It is a simulation of the business environment and enables students to experience the rigors of a business organization. The objectives of Summer Internship are: To provide opportunities to apply the concepts learnt in the class-room to real-life situations To sensitize the nuances of a work place by assigning time-bound projects in a company To provide a platform to network that will be useful to further career prospect The Internship emphasizes the evaluation of the student’s work with active involvement of the senior management. These efforts have strengthened the close industry relationship at academic centres and have also paved the way for pre-placement offers to the students An 8-week summer internship is a compulsory course requirement of the two years Post-Graduate Programme in Management. One is expected to work in the industry for a period of two months, during the summer months of April and May, after completing the first year of the academic program. The Placement process is held to help the students find internships and at the same time, help recruiters find students to intern with their firms and is typically held in the month of November every year. The purpose of the internship is to give an opportunity to apply management concepts learned during the first year to a live project, so that they can better understand and analyze real world business problems. The internship also serves to give students a flavour of the industry they are working in, which helps them in taking decisions about their long-term career paths, while also giving firms a chance to evaluate candidates in a more relaxed environment and find the right fit for their firms. Selection is typically based on personal interviews on campus. One works under the counsel of a company executive who supervises and evaluates the performance of the student during his/her summer internship and sends feedback on the same to the institute. One needs to submit a copy of the feedback from the company project guide and the project report to the institute. The summer project is equivalent to one course for students of the PGDM programmes and two courses for students of the fellowship (Doctorate) programme.
