Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and 20 other Indian health organizations released the first India-specific guidelines for prevention and management of obesity in New Delhi on November 25, 2008. Obesity as you very well that is mother of all diseases as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and even some cancers. India has the highest diabetic population in the world and is expected to grow. Consensus Points arrived at the summit: (these are much lower than the international standards) 1.Diagnostic cutoffs for BMI: (a) Overweight : 23 (b) Obese : 25 (c) For initiation of Drug therapy : 25 (d) For initiation of Bariatric surgery: 32.5 2.Diagnostic cutoffs for waist circumference for diagnosis of abdominal obesity (a)Men > 90cm (b)Women >80cm |
