IAS Exam Basic Information

I want to appear in the Indian Administrative Services Exam . Will you please provide the information regarding the IAS entrance exam eligibility criteria ?

The Indian Administrative Services Exam is a paper-pen based competitive exam held every year directed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) .

Eligibility:-

Applicants must have obtained a degree in any discipline from a recognized University .

Applicants appearing for their final year degree exam are also eligible to apply .

Applicants must have passed final year of MBBS exam but yet to complete internship can apply for the prelim exam.

The age of applicants must be 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years.

Age Relaxation:-

(i) 5 years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe.

(ii) 3 years if candidates belonging to OBC .

Exam Pattern

This exam is normally held in three parts:
Preliminary Exam

Mains exam

Interview

Prelim Exam syllabus –

Paper 1 (200 marks) - Duration : Two hrs.

History of India and Indian national movement
Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world

Current events of national and international importance

Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc.

General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change-that donot require subject specialization

Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc.

General science.

Paper 2 (200 marks) - Duration : Two hrs.

Decision making and problem solving
General mental ability
Interpersonal skills including communication skills
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. –Class X level)
English language comprehension skills (Class X level)
