The History department aims to broaden candidates' understanding of History from the Roman period to the modern day. In the process, candidates learn and practice a multitude of key historical concepts and skills such as investigation, enquiry and communication. Candidates effectively deploy the skills, thereby improving levels of communication and critical analysis. Candidates to become independent learners need to apply all the skills they learn to whatever they choose to do when they leave school. KS3 Candidates learn to identify important terms and develop historical skills. • In Year 7 candidates will study 3 main topics; the Romans, the Middle Ages (including the Norman Conquest) and the Tudors. • In Year 8 the focus of the candidates switches to 17th Century England (English Civil War and social unrest), the Changing Power of King and Parliament, the Suffragettes and Slavery. • Studies in Year 9 include the causes, events and consequences of World Wars One and Two as well as the Rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party, the Holocaust and Cold War. Text Books used: • Year 7 - Medieval Minds / Contrasts & Connections • Year 8 - Changing Minds / Societies in Change • Year 9 - Modern Minds / Peace & War • KS4 The GCSE course or Program has a controlled assessment unit on Vietnam War and a project study in Medicine through Time in year 10. In year 11 it has a source enquiry and developments in Surgery 1845 - 1918 and a depth study onLift in Nazi Germany. Required Skills • One needs to acquire knowledge and understanding of the human past. • One needs to investigate historical events, people, changes and issues. • One needs to study history in depth thematically. • One needs to use historical sources critically in their historical context. • One needs to develop study skills. Year 10 Units 1 and 2 • Controlled Assessment - Vietnam 1960-1975 • Medicine Through Time Year 11 Units 3 and 4 • 3: The Transformation of Surgery - 1845 - 1918 • 4: Life in Nazi Germany 1933 - 45 Text Books used: • Edexcel Vietnam / Edexcel Medicine & Surgery / Edexcel Life in Nazi Germany All units are worth 25% of the GCSE. KS5 AS Level candidates study Russia 1881 – 1953 – The Russian Revolutions and Stalin’s Russia, and Britain 1830 – 1885 which covers Parliamentary Reform and Chartism. At A2 candidates study ‘From Kaiser to Fuhrer: Germany 1900-1945’ and a Controlled Assessment covering a unit of their choice.
