Re: How Long Does It Take To Become a Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in mental health care.

To become a psychiatrist, you must complete all of the requirements to become a medical doctor from an accredited school of medicine.

Typically, it takes about 8 years of post-undergraduate study to become a board-certified psychiatrist - 4 years to complete your M.D. degree plus another 4 years of residency.

After completions M.D. degree, you will need to complete a 4 year residency program with at least three of these years spent specifically in the practice of psychiatry.

So, if you include the time it takes to earn a bachelor’s degree, you are looking at spending at least 12 years in school and training to become a psychiatrist.

Psychiatrist Salary-

The average annual salary for a psychiatrist in the US is $163,660.

Those who were employed in the offices of physicians had an average salary of $154,650 per year.

Those employed in outpatient care centers made an average of $190,340 per year.
