Requirements to become financial analyst

Degree Required-Bachelor's degree typical, Master's degree often preferred

Education Field of Study-Accounting, finance, statistics, mathematics, and engineering

Key Skills-Analytical, communication, computer, math, and decision making skills

Licensure Required-Licensure by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) or certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)

Steps to become financial analyst

Step 1: Earn a Degree

Most financial analysts have a bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, economics, statistics or accounting.

If you choose to attain a master's degree in business administration or finance, you may be more marketable when seeking employment.

Step 2: Obtain a Job

If you want to work on the buy side, get a job with a mutual or pension fund, investment bank or insurance company.

If you want to work on the sell side, obtain a job with a securities firm.

Step 3: Earn Licensure

You may have to obtain one or more licenses, especially if you are dealing with securities firms on the sell side.

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority oversees licensing of professionals in the securities industry.

Step 4: Consider Earning Certification

As a professional financial analyst you can obtain optional certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

This designation, administered by the CFA Institute, requires four years of work experience and the successful completion of three examinations

You can help advance your career by keeping up-to-date on money markets, the economy and tax laws.
