The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) is a government-
owned corporation of India based in the financial capital of India viz Mumbai
in the state of Maharashtra. It is wholly owned by the Central Government
and is responsible for the generation of nuclear power for electricity. NPCIL
is administered by the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India (DAE).

History of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL)

The first nuclear power plant in the country, comprising two nuclear reactor
units, was set up at Tarapur, Maharashtra on turnkey basis by GE, USA

The construction of these units began in 1964 and they became operational
in October, 1969. Indeed, India was the first country in Asia, and among a
few countries in the world, that had operating nuclear power reactors in the
year 1969

Subsequently, work on the Presuurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs)
of the first stage began with construction of RAPS-1&2 at Rawatbhata,
Rajasthan.
