The history of Calicut University is saying that the University was established in 1968 and was administered by Dr. M.M. Ghani in the 1970s.

The university had especially strong faculty in MBA, Physics, Zoology, Chemistry, Botany, History, Malayalam, English and Physical Education.

The campus locales are spread over 500 acres (2.0 km2) in rural outskirt of Malappuram, and had the feel of a hill station.

In the 1980s, a Cockroft-Walton particle accelerator was put in place on campus.

The University of Calicut is an affiliating university located at Thenjipalam in Malappuram district of Kerala state in India.

The university has a number of off-campus centres in neighbouring districts, especially Kozhikode, Wayanad, Thrissur, Palakkad and Lakshadweep islands.
