Re: HCL Lymphoma

Hey as Hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) is a type of low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It develops from blood cells called lymphocytes.

Symptoms of HCL
Tiredness, weakness or breathlessness due to a lack of red blood cells (anaemia)
Unexplained bruising or bleeding if there are low numbers of platelets (thrombocytopenia)
Frequent or persistent infections if there are low numbers of infection-fighting white blood cells called neutrophils
Swelling and tenderness in the upper left-hand side of the abdomen
Symptoms of indigestion or of feeling full after eating only small amounts of food.
Unexplained weight loss or sweating.

Tests for HCL
Blood Tests Show
Low numbers of healthy blood cells (low blood counts)
HCL cells in the blood
Detailed tests show typical changes in
the proteins on the surface of the HCL cells
the genes of the HCL cells
a bone marrow biopsy shows HCL cells in the bone marrow.

Cause
As with many cancers, the cause of hairy cell leukemia is unknown. Exposure to tobacco smoke, ionizing radiation, or industrial chemicals (with the possible exception of diesel) does not appear to increase the risk of developing HCL
Farming and gardening appear to increase the risk of HCL in some studies
