Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Kanpur is an Autonomous Institution which is fully financed by U.P. Government and affiliated to Gautam Budh Technical University, Lucknow.

It is granted academic autonomy by University Grants Commission, New Delhi and Gautam Budha Technical University, Lucknow.

B.Tech. and M.C.A.
Institute admits students in its undergraduate B.Tech and postgraduate MCA programmes through U.P. State Engineering Entrance Examination (UPSEE). The admissions against NRI quota seats in B.Tech programmes are also made through UPSEE.

M.Tech. (Full Time)
Admission in M.Tech (Full Time) programmes of the Institute is being made by the Gautam Budh Technical University, Lucknow through centralized counselling process.

M.Tech. (Part Time)
Admission in M.Tech (Part Time) programmes of the Institute is being made by the Institute itself through admission test/interview.

Ph.D.
Admission in Ph.D. programmes in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering under Quality Improvement Programmes (QIP) is done by Principal QIP coordinator nominated by Govt of India every year.
Admission in Ph.D. programmes other than under QIP is made by Gautam Budha Technical University, Lucknow.
