The Gauhati University is the first, oldest and renowned University in the entire North East India which was established in 1948. It is a teaching-cum-affiliating university.

There are several colleges, institutes etc. that are affiliated to it. At present there are approximately 326 Colleges/Institutes which come under it, which are mostly located in the districts of lower Assam.
