Re: Grading System in IIT Kharagpur

As a measure of students performance a 7-scale grading system using the following letter grades and corresponding grade points per credit.

Ex grade is the highest grade one can achieve in a particular course and computes to 10 in the calculation of grade point index (CGPA or SGPA).

A Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) will be computed for each semester. Starting from the second semester at the end of each semesters, a Cumulative
Grade Point Average (CGPA) will be computed for every student

The CGPA would indicate the cumulative performance of the student from the first semester up to the end of the semester to which it refers. The CGPA, SGPA and the grades obtained in all the subjects in a semester will be communicated to every student at the end of every semester

Grading System

EX - 10 points;
A - 9 points;
B - 8 points;
C - 7 points;
D - 6 points;
P - 5 points;
F - Failure

These points are multiplied with subject credits and a weighted average is calculated to get the Semester Grade Point Average and Cumulative Grade Point Average.

Conversion of CGPA into percentage Marks:
For a specific query by students/employers regarding conversion of CGPA into percentage marks, the following formula will be adopted for notional conversion of CGPA into percentage marks. Formula: % Marks = CGPA*10
