Guru Nanak Dev University (G.N.D.U.) was established on 24 November 1969 to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev's birth quincentenary. It is both a residential and an affiliating university.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council accredited it at 5- star level. Later, it was accredited at NAAC Grade "A" with a CGPA of 3.5. Most recently, it has been accredited with NAAC CGPA 3.51, enshrined with the esteemed "University with Potential for Excellence" and "Category - 1Autonomy" Status by UGC and MHRD respectively.


The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked it 86 overall in India and 59 among universities in 2018. More recently, CWUR, a global ranking based in UAE, has rated it among top 8.7% Institutions across world.
