Gatekeeping in Media

I am PG student of Mass Media at National Institute of Mass Communication. So can you please give me a description on Gatekeeping Theory of mass media in simple language?

In mass media many news or information is published by news agencies before the publication of those news they are doing filtration about the information for dissemination whether for publication, the internet, broadcasting or some other way of communication. This process is known as Gate keeping.

The academic theory of gate keeping is found in many subjects as communication studies, political science , journalism, and sociology but gate keeping is originally used in mass media for filtrated any information before dissemination.

The theory of gate keeping was firstly instituted in 1943 by Social psychologist Kurt Lewin .gate keeping is used in all level of the mass media. Media reporter, editors and includes media outlet owners even advertisers are also act as a gatekeeper.
