The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration containing 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. There will be only objective questions, the paper pattern is as following Weightage Questions (total 65) General Aptitude 15% Marks Five 1 mark questions Five 2 mark questions Engineering Maths 15% Marks 25- 1 mark questions 30 - 2 mark questions Subject of Paper 70% Marks GATE paper pattern GATE 2014 General Aptitude Questions: Apart from the core subject questions, all papers will contain a few questions that test the General Aptitude (Language and Analytical Skills of the candidates. GATE 2014 Exam Pattern for XE : Section A: Engineering Mathematics (compulsory) GA – General Aptitude (compulsory) Any two of XE sections B to G (see table above): GATE 2014 Exam Pattern for XL: Section H – Chemistry (compulsory) GA – General Aptitude (compulsory) Any two of XL sections I to M Note: For both XE and XL Papers of GATE 2014: Candidates can view the questions before making the choice of two XE sections from B to G during the examination. Candidates can choose only two optional sections. To change midway in the exam, candidates have to deselect one of the previously chosen sections to attempt a new one GATE 2014 Exam Duration: 3 hours GATE 2014 Exam Pattern : Online Computer Based Test A single paper with 65 total questions Maximum marks are 100 Questions will be multiple choice as well as numerical type 10 questions will be on General Aptitude carrying 15 marks For GATE 2014 paper codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF and XE: The Engineering Mathematics paper will account for 13% of the total marks, General Aptitude section - 15% of the total marks and the subject questions will account for the rest of the 72% For GATE 2014 Paper codes AR, CY, GG, MA, PH and XL: The General Aptitude Section will account for 15% and remaining 85% will be on the subject of the paper. GATE 2014 Design of Questions: Candidates will be tested in the following abilities: 1. Recall: Candidates are expected to answer these from memory or a one computation give as the questions of this typeare based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline of the paper. 2. Comprehension: Candidates will be tested in their understanding of the fundamentals of their subject with conclusions from the given ideas or facts. 3. Application: Candidates are required to use computation or logical reasoning to apply their knowledge for obtaining the answers 4. Analysis and Synthesis: Candidates have to analyse the given data, diagrams, images to answer the questions. GATE 2014 Marking Scheme: Negative marking is prevalent for the exam as follows: For 1-mark multiple-choice questions: deduction of 1/3 marks for a wrong answer For 2-marks multiple-choice questions: 2/3 marks will be deducted for a wrong answer. For Numerical answer type questions: No Negative Marking GA section has 5 questions of 1 mark each: 5 marks 5 questions for 2 marks each: 10 marks For General Aptitude (GA) Questions: Total Marks: 15 GA section has 5 questions of 1 mark each: 5 marks 5 questions for 2 marks each: 10 marks For Question Papers other than GG, XE and X: 25 questions of 1 mark each: 25 marks 30 questions of 2 marks each: 60 marks For GG (Geology and Geophysics) Paper: In addition to the General Aptitude (GA) section, there are two parts as follows Part A (common to all candidates) with 25 questions of 1 mark each: 25 Marks Part B: consists of two sections- Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geo-physics).
