The Banaras Hindu University was established in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya who was a prominent lawyer and an Indian independence activist.

Sant Baba Attar Singh ji Mastuana (Panjab) laid the foundation stone of Banaras Hindu University at Varanasi in 1914 on the request of the Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya.
