It is in Gangodawila, Nugegoda, near Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, the capital city.

It was formed in 1958 out of the Vidyodaya Pirivena, a Buddhist educational centre which was founded in 1873 by Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thera
