Re: Father of Indian Navy
The 17th-century Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is considered as the 'Father of the Indian Navy'. Shivaji Bhonsle also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was an Indian warrior king and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. He carved out a commune from the declining Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire. In 1674, he was formally crowned as the Chhatrapati (Monarch) of his realm at Raigad. He built a strong naval presence across long coast of Konkan and Goa to protect sea trade, to protect the lands from sack of prosperity of subjects from coastal raids, plunder and destruction by Arabs, Portuguese, British, Abyssinians and pirates. He built ships in towns such as Kalyan, Bhivandi, and Goa for building fighting navy and trade. He also built a number of sea forts and bases for repair, storage and shelter. He fought many lengthy battles with Siddis of Janjira on coastline. The fleet grew to reportedly 160 to 700 merchant, support and fighting vessels. He started trading with foreigners on his own after possession of eight or nine ports in the Deccan. Shivaji's admiral Kanhoji Angre is often said to be the "Father of Indian Navy" Indian Navy Active 1830–Present Country India Type Navy Size 79,023 active personnel 295 ships & 251 aircraft Part of Indian Armed Forces,(Ministry of Defence, Government of India) Headquarters New Delhi Motto(s) शं नो वरुणः (Sanskrit) IAST: Shaṃ No Varunaḥ (May the Lord of the Water be auspicious unto us) Colours Navy Blue, White March Jai Bharati Fleet 2 aircraft carriers 1 amphibious transport dock 9 landing ship tanks 10 destroyers 14 frigates 24 corvettes 6 mine countermeasure vessels 14 submarines 25 patrol vessels 4 replenishment oilers Engagements First Opium War Second Opium War World War I World War II Portuguese-Indian War Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 Bangladesh Liberation War Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 Anti-piracy operations in Somalia |
