The Assam Public Service Commission conducts Civil Services (Main) Examination; it came into existence in 1937 in accordance with the provision of the Government of India.

Examinations

The following Examinations are conducted by the APSC:
Combined Competitive Examination
Departmental Examinations
Combined Competitive Examination

The Government of Assam recruits various posts to the Civil Services. The written examination consists of two stages:
The Preliminary
The Main Examination

Preliminary Examination

The exam consists of two papers of two hours duration each.
This exam is meant to serve as screening test only.
The marks scored in the Pre exam by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to Main exam are not counted for determining the final selection. The questions are of multiple choice objective types:

Paper-I General Studies
Paper-II One optional subject to be selected from the list of optional subjects

Main Examination and Interview

The Main Exam is consists of a Written Exam and a viva-voce test:

Applicants who clear Main Exam are called for a viva-voce test.
The viva-voce test is of 200 marks with no qualifying marks.
The written exam consists of the following papers of 3 hours duration each.
The questions of the Main Exam are conventional essay type:

Paper-I General English
Paper-II General Studies
Paper-III Any two optional subjects to be selected from the list of optional subject (two papers each)
Paper-IV Any two optional subjects to be selected from the list of optional subject (two papers each)
