Enterovirus Research Centre

Situated at Mumbai in Maharashtra the Enterovirus Research Centre (ERC) conducts research on diseases caused by Enteroviruses, especially paralytic poliomyelitis, acute flaccid paralysis, acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis, aseptic meningitis/ encephalitis and also acute gastroenteritis caused by enteric viruses such as Rotavirus, Norovirus and Enteroviruses.

Recognition

ERC is a part of the WHO network of 146 polio laboratories worldwide.
ERC based on its contribution to the Polio Eradication Programme, is also a WHO recognised Global Specialized Laboratory for Polio (GSL) the only laboratory, among the seven laboratories so recognized, outside the developed world.

Thrust Area of Research

Epidemiology of poliomyelitis leading to the understanding of virus transmission patterns for development of policies and strategies for disease control and eradication.

Studies on poliomyelitis vaccines such as immunization schedules, vaccination campaigns, evaluation and improvements of vaccine delivery systems.

Assistance to the Global Polio Eradication Program through laboratory support for disease diagnosis, understanding disease transmission by molecular epidemiology studies, evaluation of program progress, designing, testing and validating newer assays,

Participating in introduction of newer vaccine formulations and contributions to national policy on polio eradication.

In Addition to AFP surveillance, Enterovirus Research Centre is carrying supplementary surveillance of wild poliovirus/VPDV by testing sewage samples from selected high risk slum areas in Mumbai since 2001.
