Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi Enactus is an international non-profit organization that aims to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities and become socially responsible business leaders. Enactus IIT Delhi is the student chapter of Enactus in the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. It was established in July 2010, it comprises of a team of 26 dedicated students working passionately for social enterprise, and has now grown into one of the most dynamic student initiatives while working on its latest projects: Project Aanch and Food For Life.


Enactus IIT Delhi project is trying to improve the situation in one such community. Enactus IIT Delhi project runs in Bhatti mines, which is a community of over 22,000 members located near Chattarpur, New Delhi. Mostly working as daily wage labours, their economic status forces them to resort to traditional chulhas since they cannot afford LPG stoves.

Here women cook on open fires or rudimentary cook stoves that are fuelled by coal or solid biomass which produces noxious smoke that causes severe Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) affecting the lives of women and children. Enactus IIT Delhi project involves training women to manufacture smokeless cooking stoves which is being marketed in their community. The business model has been designed to empower 5 women in the community and train them as social entrepreneurs.

They have procured a mould of INDEX award winning smokeless stove based on a design by Philips with the help of a fellowship received from Swechha (an NGO engaged in environmental and social development issues) and are training women, their grassroots entrepreneurs, to manufacture smokeless stoves from the mould.
