Re: Eligibility For CDS And AFCAT

Combined Defence Services Exam is conducted by the UPSC two times in a year for admissions to Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA) and Officers Training Academy (OTA).

CDS Eligibility

For IMA and OTA-

You need a degree of a recognized university

For INA-

Degree in engineering is required

For AFA-

You should have a recognized degree and Physics & Mathematics at 10+2 level.

Women candidates are eligible for OTA only.

Age Limit -

Indian Military Academy 19-24 years
Air Force Academy 19-24 years
Naval Academy 19-22 years
Officers’ Training Academy 19-25 years

AFCAT exam

Air Force Combined Admission Test AFCAT exam is conducted by India Air Force for grant of Short Service Commission in Flying Branch and Permanent/Short Service Commission in Technical and Ground Duty Branches of the IAF.

AFCAT Eligibility

For Flying Branch:


Bachelor’s degree in any subject area with 60% Marks from a recognized University or Bachelor of Engineering / Bachelor of Technology of 4 years with 60% Marks.

Candidates must be passed 12th Examination with Maths and Physics.

Age Limit:

Candidates should be between 20 years to 24 years as on 1st Jul. 2016.

However candidates holding valid Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) will be relaxed in age upto 26 years.

Physical Standards:

Minimum Height: 162.5 cms with correlated weight
Leg length: Min-99 cms. Max-120 cms.
Thigh length: Max-64cms.
Sitting height: Min-81.5 cms. Max-96 cms.
Vision – 6/6 and 6/9

For Technical Branch:

Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) AE (L):

Four year degree qualification from a recognised university or cleared sections A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India or Graduate Membership examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers by actual studies.

Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical) AE (M):

Four year degree qualification from a recognised university or cleared sections A and B examination of Associate Membership of Instituion of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India or Graduate Membership examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers by actual studies.

Age Limit:

Candidates should be below 26 years as on 1st Jul, 2016.

Physical Standards:

Minimum Height (Men) - 157.5 cms, (Women) - 152 cms with correlated weight

For Ground Duty Branches:

Administration and Logistics-

Graduate degree in any discipline with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate of all papers put together or a Post Graduate degree/equivalent diploma in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers put together.

Accounts -

Graduate degree in Commerce (B.Com) with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate of all papers put together or a Post Graduate Degree in Commerce (M.Com)/CA/ICWA with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers put together.
Education -

Post Graduate Degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers put together.

Age Limits

For Graduates 20 to 23 years
For Post Graduates/LLB (5 years) 20 to 25 years
For LLB (3 years) 20 to 26 years
For M.Ed/Ph.D/CA/ICWA 20 to 27 years
