Department of Technical Education was separated from the Directorate of Industries, U.P. and had been established as an independent unit in the 1961 for the planned, chronological and coordinated development of technical education in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The main objectives of the department are to raise the standard of technical education and to make it more useful according to the needs of the society & industries and to develop technical education is planned and coordinated manner with a view of modernisation of industries, new technologies and increasing computerisation and to put emphasis and quality rather than expansion.
