PART A (10 X 2= 20 MARKS)

1. Define coefficient of viscosity and critical velocity.
2. State Hookes law.
3. Define Emissive and Absorptive power.
4. What is meant by radial flow of heat?
5. Write any four properties of a good refrigerant.
6. Distinguish between isothermal and adiabatic process.
7. Distinguish between intensity of sound and loudness.
8. What is Phon and Sone?
9. Write any four differences between in step index and graded index fibers.
10. What are active and passive sensors.

11. a) Derive an expression for the internal bending moment of a beam.
b) Discuss a method to determine the Youngs modulus.

13.a) Discuss the method of determining the thermal conductivities of glass.
b) Derive the thermal conductivity of material by radial flow of heat method.

14. Derive an expression for heat conduction through compound media which are is series and parallel.

15.a) Explain with a neat sketch the working of Frigidaire.
b) Explain the entropy-temperature diagram of Carnot Cycle.

16. Explain the working of Otto engine with a neat diagram and also derive its efficiency.

17. Derive Sabines formula for reverberation time by Jagers method.

18.a) Explain the measurement of absorption coefficient.
b) Two trains are approaching each other with a speed of 36km per hour. If the engine of the train emits a note of 1000 vibrations, what will be the frequency of the note as heard by a person sitting in the other train? Velocity of sound in air= 330m/sec

19.a) Explain the construction and working of a CO2 laser.
b) Explain IMT sensor.
