The Department of Ayurveda is started in May 1960.

It was founded under the Health and Panchayat along with establishment of Gujarat state.

There are more than 13000 registered practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine (Ayurveda) and 12101 Homoeopathy in Gujarat. (Till December 2013).

There are 33 well equipped speciality Ayurveda hospitals providing Panchkarma and Ksharsootra treatment to the needy people.
