Assam Agricultural University was came into existence in the year 1969. It is affiliated to ICAR . It is centered at Jorhat, Assam, India .

The department of Agricultural Biotechnology is one of the leading Biotechnology teaching and research facility in India.

It sponsored a separate Post-Graduate teaching course under the department of Plant Breeding and Genetics in the year 1988, which later on became a full-fledged department in the year 1996.

The department offers both Masters and PhD degree programmes in Agricultural Biotechnology

It conducts research in the field of Crop Genomics, Molecular Breeding, Gene Technology, Microbial Biotechnology, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and Bioinformatics.

It has a major outreach course under which it runs a commercial tissue culture lab to form large number of planting material of banana for the use of the farmers of the region.
