The National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre, AIIMS was established in 1988 and was functional from the premises of the DeenDayal Upadhyay Hospital, New Delhi. In 2003 it was upgraded as the National Centre (National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre) and is fully operational from its new premises in Ghaziabad, Delhi-NCR since April 2003.


The centre has been involved in:

Assessing magnitude of addiction problem in India
Providing clinical care to patients – outpatient, inpatient and community based -through daily OPD, specialty clinics, ward and community clinics in urban-slums of Delhi
Health education& prevention of addictive disorders in India
Capacity building & human resource development – including training of several categories of staff
Documentation, publication of resource material and creation of database
Establishment and development of laboratory services to detect drugs of abuse in body fluids and health damage
Research


Education


It provides training to the medical, nursing and psychology students of AIIMS. Clinical posting to the centre is a part of the curricula for the following courses:

The undergraduate students (M.B.B.S. course) are posted to the centre during their clinical training in psychiatry.

All the post-graduate students of psychiatry (M.D.) at the Institute are posted to the centre for a period of 6 months to receive training on various aspects of assessment, diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders. The modalities for training include clinical teaching as well as academic programmes such as case-conferences, Seminars, and Journal clubs.

The M.Sc. (Nursing) students of the College of Nursing at the Institute are also posted to the centre and receive exposure and training in providing nursing care to patients of substance use disorders.

It has also facilities for PhD. in Addiction Psychiatry.

Besides these it is involved in providing training to various categories of staff throughout the country and out-side India through its training programmes. Manuals for doctors have also been developed and are available for free download.
