The DCE Directory Service is a central repository for information about resources in the distributed system. Typical resources are users, machines, and RPC-based services.

DCE/RPC, short for "Distributed Computing Environment / Remote Procedure Calls", is the remote procedure call system developed for the Distributed Computing Environment.

DCE is based on three distributed computing models:


Client/server
A way of organizing a distributed application
Remote procedure call
A way of communicating between parts of a distributed application
