TYPES OF SURVEY: Defini t i on. Objects of Surveying. Princi ples
of Surveying. Uses of survey, Classificat i on of Surveying. Primary–
Pl ain, Geodeti c. Secondary – Based on Instruments, method, obj ect,
Nature of field.

CHAIN & CROSS STAFF SURVEY: Principle of Chain Survey.
Study and use of Instruments for linear measurements – chain, Tape,
Ranging Rod, arrows, pegs, cross Staff , opti cal Square, line Ranger.
Ranging –Direct and Indi rect Ranging Chaining – Pl ain andsl oping
grounds. ChainTri angulat i on – Survey Stati on and thei r Select i ons,
factors affect ing selecti on of survey stati on. Survey lines, Check
lines, Ti e lines, base line. Taking offsets. l ong and short offset,
degree of offset. Obstacles in chaining. Chain & cross staff Survey
for finding area of a field (Numerical problems)Errors in chain

COMPASS SURVEY: Principle of Compass Survey. Bearing of
lines – Meridian –True, Magneti c, and Arbi trary. Bearing –fore
bearing, Back bearing, Whol e ci rcle bearing, Quadrennial bearing
system and Reduced bearing, Conversi on of bearings, finding
included angles f rom bearings. Prismat i c Compass – Component,
constructi on and use. Local attracti on, Causes, precauti ons to be
taken to avoi d and correcti on of bearings affected due to l ocal
attracti on, cal culat i on of included angles. Traversing – traversing by
chain and compass. open traverse, cl osed traverse, check on open
and cl osed traverse. Graphical adjust ment for cl osing error.
Numerical problems on calculat i on of bearings, Angles and l ocal

LEVELLING: Defini t i ons, meaning of vari ous terms used in
leveling – Level surface, Level line, horizontal line, Verti cal line,
Datum surface, Reduced l evel , Bench mark and i ts types.Dumpy level –Components, Constructi on, Line of sight, Line of
Collimat i on, Bubble tube axis, l eveling Staff –Telescopi c and
