Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT), Kharagpur was established in 1950 at Hijli.

Computer and Informatics Centre (CIC) is responsible for maintaining the central computing and networking infrastructure of IIT Kharagpur. The computing facility primarily involves PC and workstation labs running both general and special-purpose software which used for holding lab classes of different departments. Internet connection inside IIT Kharagpur is provided through an HTTP Proxy server. A proxy server acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from internet. For addresses that are on the KGP LAN Network, using the proxy server is not required.
