The Centre of Exploration Geophysics was established in 1969 under the Indo-Soviet bilateral agreement, which functioned in collaboration with the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute (MGPI) till 1979.

The Department has been recognized and financed under the DRS and COSIST programmes of UGC during 1986-97 and DRS Phase-III was in operation during 1997-2002.

Geophysics is the study of the earth by physical methods.

The full-fledged three year M.Sc. (Tech) course in Geophysics was introduced in 1965 and an independent Department of Geophysics was created in 1967.
