Since inception of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 1956, the Centre for Community Medicine (CCM) has been a key department at AIIMS.

The Centre aims to produce high quality public health professionals and community physicians. It is consistently working towards discovery of new knowledge in domain of public health, advocacy for application of new ideas in health care of populations.

Its main focus area is on evolution of a replicable model of comprehensive health services and providing consultancy to strengthen capacity of health organizations at national and international level.

Research Activities

I. Research Completed
o Pilot project on the use of Handheld Computers in the area of health care delivery funded by Media Lab Asia collaboration between the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India, and, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
o WHO funded Project on Feasibility of Involvement of Private Medical Practitioners (PMPs) Revised National TB Control Programme.
o WHO funded Pilot Project on Integrated control of Non-communicable diseases (NCDs)
o WHO funded project on A case definition of Epilepsy for use in the community by primary care providers

II. Research Projects Continuing
o Non-communicable diseases surveillance funded by ICMR- NCD RF survey using WHO STEPwise approach being conducted in rural/urban/slum areas of Ballabgarh. Data collection completed.
o WHO funded project on Diagnosis of Psychosis by primary care providers
o USAID funded project by Neonatal Health Research Initiative on Factors influencing the health seeking behaviour, health care facilities in relation to new born care
o IARC funded project on Comparative evaluation of a single versus double freeze cryo-therapy in management of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia.
o Case management of reproductive tract infections in India: an analysis of clinical protocols and cost.
o WHO funded project on Reliability testing and Validation of Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) questionnaires.
o CRHSP Ballabgarh has been awarded full membership of the International Network for the continuous Demographic Evaluation of Populations and their Health in Developing Countries. (INDEPTH) Network since October 2003. The objectives of the INDEPTH network are:
o To link existing field sites that are able to continuously monitor the health and demographic status of geographically dispersed populations through a focused network.
o To initiate and facilitate cross- site, longitudinal health and social studies and impact assessment in severely resource- constrained populations.
o Micronutrient Quality Assurance Laboratory.
o Partnership with Bharat Scouts & Guides to test quality and iodine content of salt.
o Tracking Progress towards Sustaining Elimination of IDD with State Government of Tamil Nadu/ Orissa/ Goa/ Bihar/Rajasthan.
o Establishment of Sentinel Surveillance system for cardiovascular diseases in industrial population.
