Central Potato research Institute is an institute under the ICAR.

Potato research in India officially initiated on 1st April, 1935 with the opening
of 3 breeding and seed production stations at Shimla, Kufri (both Shimla
hills) and Bhowali (Kumaon hills), under the Imperial Agricultural Research
Institute, New Delhi.

In 1945, a structure for the formation of Central Potato Research Institute
was drawn up.

The main institute is located in the heart of Shimla city, near Bemloe, which
are about 4 km from Shimla bus stand and 6 km from Shimla railway station
on the National Highway No.22.
The seat of the institute is at an altitude of 2,000 metres above mean sea
level and has wet temperate climate.


CPRI Kufri:

The station is situated in the North-western Himalayan hills.
It has 2 units, one for potato nucleus seed production and another for breeders' seed production.
The 3rd unit carries out hybridization to cater to all the breeding programmes of the Institute, evaluation of hybrid and research on agronomical aspects and late blight.
