Common Admission Test is better known as CAT before year 2009 CAT was in format of paper-pencil based test on a fixed date for all CAT takers. CAT has become a computer based test in year 2009.
Common Admission Test conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management to get admission is top B schools and ITM institutes for two year full time Post Graduate Programmes in Management and Ph.D programmes. Candidates aspiring to get admission into IIMs need to appear for Common Admission Test (CAT).

Eligibility for CAT:
Students who wish to appear in CAT should have a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA), recognized by any of the Universities.

Application procedure for CAT:
Notification for CAT generally announced in the last week of August every year by India Institutes of managements in few business dailies and the official website of CAT.
Students who wish to appear in CAT needs to purchase the CAT voucher form any branch of Axis Bank and then they need to register on CAT website and applicant should keep a valid email ID as all communications will be sent by IIMs to mail ID of applicant.

CAT Pattern:
Common Admission Test follows 4 sections which include Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.
Duration- 140 minutes
No of questions- 60
Questions related to- Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning.

CAT tests your skills in five broad areas.
1. English
2. Problem Solving (Mathematics)
3. DI (Data Interpretation)
4. DS (Data Sufficiency)
5. LR (Logical Reasoning)

CAT Data Interpretation Syllabus: Interpretation and analysis of data based on text, tables, graphs (line, area), charts (column, bar, pie), venn diagram, etc.

CAT Logical Reasoning Syllabus: Clocks, calendars, binary logic, seating arrangement, blood relations, logical sequence, assumption, premise, conclusion, linear and matrix arrangement, etc.

CAT Verbal/English Ability Syllabus: Reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, syllogisms, analogies, antonyms and synonyms, fill in the blanks, sentence correction, idioms, etc.

CAT Quant/Maths Ability Syllabus: Number systems, geometry, trigonometry, probability, permutation combination, algebra, menstruation, time and work, averages, percentages, profit and loss, quadratic and linear equations, etc.

CAT Exam (Common Admission Test) is a computer-based selection test conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) as a prerequisite for admissions to their business administration programs.


Apart from the IIMs, the CAT is also a prerequisite for admissions into numerous other prestigious management colleges across India which includes institutes like S.P Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Management Development Institute (Gurgaon), Institute of Management Technology (IMT), and several others.

CAT Eligibility Criteria 2019


One should obtain a Bachelor’s Degree across disciplines from a recognised University or Institute

General and OBC-NC category candidates must secure minimum 50% marks in aggregate or equivalent CGPA. For reserved category candidates, the minimum 45% marks.

The exam duration is 3 years.

Final year graduation students are also eligible to apply provided they complete their undergraduate studies within the stipulated schedule.

Age Limit - There is no age limit for applying or appearing in CAT exam
