University of Calcutta or Calcutta University is a type of public university.
It was formed in the year 1857.

It is located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

The University of Calcutta is a pioneering institute in introducing post-graduate studies in Applied Science in 1920's.
the department of Applied Chemistry came into existence in 1920 along with sister Technology departments.

A 3 year M.Sc Tech course in Applied Chemistry was introduced in the department in 1951. Later it was further revised to a 2 year B.Tech. and 1 year M.Tech. course in Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology in 1959.
In 1968, under the initiative of the Ministry of Education, the Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology course was re-structured to 3 year B.Tech and 2 year M.Tech courses.
The department now offers a 3 year B.Tech. and four semester M.Tech. course in Chemical Engineering.
