Azim Premji University was established by the Azim Premji Foundation (APF). APF is a non-profit organization focused on primary education. It was granted its charter by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly through The Azim Premji University Act of 2010.

Its vision is to contribute to the realisation of a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society and expand the frontiers of knowledge in education, development and allied fields through research.
