Assam University came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989 (Established under an Act of Parliament). It was established in 1994, since then the University is steadily becoming an excellent centre of learning.

It was ranked 87 among universities by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of 2018 and in the 101-150 band overall. All the colleges in the 5 districts of South Assam, viz, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, North Cachar Hills or Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong district fall within university's jurisdiction.
