At IIT Madras, Department of Mathematics was established in 1960. Abstraction and application rooted in quantitative reasoning sustain all its activities.

The Department conducts research in Algebra, Analysis, Computational & Theoretical Fluid Dynamics, Mathematical Physics, Stochastic Processes, Theoretical Computer Science and Discrete Mathematics.

Department of Mathematics Programs Offered

M.Sc Programme

The 4-semester M.Sc programme is carefully designed to impart essential knowledge in Mathematics with opportunities for specialization in all major areas of pure and applied mathematics.

In the first three semesters the focus is on core courses.

Admissions-

Admission to M.Sc. programmes is open to candidates qualified in JAM -Joint Admission Test to M.Sc.

M.Tech Programme

The department offer M.Tech programme in Industrial Mathematics and Scientific Computing.

The duration of this programme is two years. The programme trains man power to solve industrial problems.

Admissions

The programme admits post graduate students of science and graduate students of engineering with a valid GATE score.

For sponsored candidates GATE score is not mandatory.

Ph.D. Program-

Department conducts various research activities both fundamental and applied.

The department offers guidance in the following broad fields of research in Mathematics leading to Doctor of Philosophy degree of the IIT Madras.
