The Acute Medical Units, known as AMUs, were only created nationally in 1999 and have become one of the fastest growing specialities in hospitals. AMU accepts patients directly from GP's and from A&E, with as many as 30 per cent of patients discharged back to the care of their GP after being treated.

There are over 450 consultants who specialise in acute medicine across the UK working in 225 hospitals. University Hospitals of North Midlands has eight consultants specialising in acute medicine.
