The Department of Gastroenterology at AIIMS or All India Institute of Medical Sciences was started in 1971 to create qualified gastroenterologists for India.

It has been consistently ranked as the best Department of Gastroenterology in India for many years in surveys conducted by leading News weeklies.

In Dec 2011 it was awarded as the Best Department of Gastroenterology in India at the CNBC TV18 India Healthcare Awards.
