To join merchant navy After completing B tech you have to participate in Combined Defense Service Examination organizes by UPSC two times in a Year.

Eligibility:
Male candidates can apply for IMA, AFA, NA and OTA and female candidates can apply only for OTA.
The education qualification for applying in CDS is as follows:

AFA:
Candidates willing to apply for Air force academy should have studied Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level along with a degree from recognized university or bachelor degree in engineering /technology.

Women candidates can not apply for Air force academy.

IMA:
Aspirants willing to apply of Indian military academy through CDS 1 2014 examination should have a degree from recognized university.

NA:
Aspirants applying for Indian naval academy should have engineering degree from any recognized university or institute

OTA:
All other men candidates as well as women candidates applying for Officers training academy should have a degree to qualify for minimum educational qualification required by UPSC to fill application form of CDS.

Yes, you can join merchant navy on the deck cadet as you have done graduation degree in mechanical Engineering

There are special 1 or 2 years diploma courses to become deck cadet officer in the merchant navy for mechanical engineers.

You can join in the govt or private merchant navy institutes to pursue the cadet course.
