Cochin Shipyard was imagined in the year 1969 when a team surveyed several plaxed in India before choosing Cochin for the set up of the 1st Greenfield Shipbuilding Yard in India. In the last three decades the corporation has emerged as a harbinger in the Indian Shipbuilding & Ship repair industry. This yard can construct and repair the biggest vessels in India. It can build ships up to 1, 10,000 DWT and repair ships up to 1, 25,000 DWT. The yard facilities in the 1st phase were finished via 1982. The yard was planned and constructed below technical collaborationism with M/s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (M.H.I), Japan. The company was lawfully integrated in the year 1972
