Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute Barrackpore
The Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (CIFRI) is the most former prime research institute in the area of inland fisheries research and training in India. Founded initially as Central Inland Fisheries Research Station by the Govt. of India at Kolkata in 1947, it accepted the status of an institute and transferred to Barrackpore (North 24-Parganas, West Bengal) in 1959. The Institute came under the administrative control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research in October 1967.
This division placed at Barrackpore, currently functions on the Hooghly-Maltah and Narmada Estuarine systems. The primary aims of the institute were to carry researches for a proper appraisal of inland fisheries resources of the nation and to develop suitable techniques for their conservation and optimal utilization. CIFRI successfully standardized the riverine spawn collection nets in terms of their shape size and mesh-size to fit various hydrological conditions.
